The unconscious

We all have been surprised by the unexpected reactions of others (“it does not look like her”) or by our own reactions (“I was out of myself”), by automatic, but revealing, gestures, by words going beyond our conscious thoughts, by a word said for another, by sudden recollections. All are produced by the unconscious, as are dreams and day dreaming “Discovered” during the 19e century through its manifestations and its power in the case of mentally ill persons, it was then recognized in each of us. Not much was known about it (hence its name) until the works of S Freud (about the personal Unconscious), then the works of CG Jung, who explored its deeper layers, the Collective Unconscious, and discovered its life forces and its autonomy.
